SPORTS MASSAGE
Sports Massage is of benefit to athletes of all standards to enhance performance, prevent injury, enhance flexibility and decrease post exercise soreness. Concentrating on specific areas of the body, techniques are used to increase joint movement, break down adhesions and areas of tension, and increase blood flow through the muscles.
Treatments fall into three categories: pre event, post event and maintenance

Pre event is useful immediately before sporting activity to increase blood flow to the muscles and enhance the effect of a warm up
Post event follows activity to help flush away toxins from the muscles, reduce soreness and speed recovery
Maintenance massage should take place regularly to identify and treat problem areas such as small points of muscular spasm, scarring or adhesions which could otherwise lead to injury
Injuries cannot be treated until 48 hours after they occur, during which time the standard 'RICE' therapy should be applied
Rest the injury as much as possible
Ice the injury, using a covered ice cube or even a bag of frozen peas, for 5 minutes every hour
Compress the injury if possible to reduce swelling in the area
Elevate the injury to restrict the flow of fluid to the area
